Jon Kabat-Zinn, born on June 5, 1944, is a pioneering figure in the field of mindfulness and stress reduction. He is best known for developing the Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction (MBSR) program, which has been widely used to help people manage stress, anxiety, and chronic pain through mindfulness practices.
Kabat-Zinn earned his Ph.D. in molecular biology from MIT, where he studied under Nobel Laureate Salvador Luria. In the late 1970s, he began integrating his interest in meditation and yoga with scientific research, leading to the creation of the MBSR program at the University of Massachusetts Medical School in 1979.
His work has been instrumental in bringing mindfulness into mainstream medicine and psychology.
