Franklin Delano Roosevelt, commonly known as FDR, was born on January 30, 1882, in Hyde Park, New York. He served as the 32nd President of the United States from 1933 to 1945, the only president to be elected to four terms. His presidency is noted for leading the country through two of its gravest crises: the Great Depression and World War II.

Roosevelt came from a wealthy and influential family. He attended Harvard University and later studied law at Columbia Law School. His political career began in the New York State Senate, and he went on to serve as Assistant Secretary of the Navy under President Woodrow Wilson. In 1921, Roosevelt was struck by polio, which left him paralyzed from the waist down. Despite this, he remained politically active and returned to the public eye as the Governor of New York from 1929 to 1932.

As President, Roosevelt implemented the New Deal, a series of programs, public work projects, and financial reforms designed to provide relief to the unemployed, recover the economy, and reform the financial system. His leadership during the Great Depression significantly expanded the role of the federal government in American life and laid the foundation for the modern welfare state.

During World War II, Roosevelt played a crucial role in mobilizing the nation for war, fostering the Allied strategy, and establishing the United Nations. His vision of a post-war world shaped the international order and promoted principles of collective security and economic cooperation.

Roosevelt’s charismatic leadership, eloquent speeches, and innovative policies earned him widespread admiration. However, his presidency also faced criticism for certain aspects, such as the internment of Japanese Americans during World War II and his attempts to expand the Supreme Court.

FDR’s health declined during his fourth term, and he passed away on April 12, 1945, just months before the end of World War II. His legacy endures through his transformative impact on American society and his contributions to shaping the modern world order.
