Maya Angelou (1928-2014) was an acclaimed American poet, memoirist, and civil rights activist. Born Marguerite Ann Johnson in St. Louis, Missouri, she overcame a challenging childhood marked by trauma and displacement. Her first autobiography, “I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings” (1969), garnered international acclaim and established her as a powerful literary voice.
Angelou’s works, including poetry collections like “And Still I Rise,” explore themes of identity, resilience, and social justice. She was also a prominent figure in the civil rights movement, working alongside leaders like Martin Luther King Jr. and Malcolm X.
